Inside Hong Kong's Red Taxis: A Licensed Driver's Guide
READ TIME: 5 MINUTES · PUBLISHED: 2026-09-04
Hong Kong’s red taxis are as iconic as the city’s skyline. Yet for most visitors, taking a taxi remains an unpredictable transaction of waving hands at curbs, wondering which tunnel to take, and deciphering meter surcharges.
As a licensed commercial red taxi driver and filmmaker, Nathan Hui explains how the system actually works, what the different colors mean, and why the red taxi cabin is the ultimate camera dolly for experiencing Hong Kong.
The Three Colors of Hong Kong Taxis
Hong Kong taxis are strictly divided into three geographic categories governed by licensing laws:
- Red Taxis (Urban): The most versatile. Red taxis can operate throughout all of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories, and Chek Lap Kok (the Airport), as well as Hong Kong Disneyland. Only Tung Chung South and south Lantau are restricted.
- Green Taxis (New Territories): Restricted solely to the rural and suburban New Territories. They cannot enter Kowloon or Hong Kong Island.
- Blue Taxis (Lantau Island): A fleet of around 75 vehicles operating exclusively on Lantau Island and the Airport.
Because red taxis possess universal territorial rights across both sides of Victoria Harbour, they are the only vehicles capable of taking you seamlessly from an island fishing village or northern mountain pass straight into the heart of neon Kowloon.
"The mechanical click of the meter, the vinyl seats, and the automatic door lever are pieces of living Hong Kong heritage."
The Red Taxi as a Moving Film Set
In cinema, directors use camera dollies and stabilization rigs to capture smooth motion. In Hong Kong, the red Toyota Crown Comfort serves that exact purpose.
Sitting in the passenger seat elevates your viewpoint just above pedestrian eye level while maintaining road-level intimacy. The panoramic windscreen frames apartment towers slicing through the clouds, while raindrops on the glass create natural prismatic layers when passing under neon shopfronts.
This is the core concept behind Sleepless Driver: transforming a commercial red taxi into an authored, private cinematic journey where Nathan Hui shares his city from behind the wheel.
